Church of the Wedding Feast at Cana and the Miracle of Turning Water Into Wine | Holy Land Pilgrimage Tour for Filipinos

The first public miracle of Jesus is the turning of water into wine during a Jewish wedding in Cana where He, Mary and some of His disciples attended. During the wedding, Mary told Jesus that there is no more wine and that Jesus responded that His time has not yet come.

Bible scholars account the miracle of turning water into wine as extremely symbolic to the Christian faith.  First, Jesus called Mary as ‘woman’ connotes the universality of His mission.  Second, His attendance and divine intervention to save the hosts from embarrassment connotes His adherence to the sanctity of marriage. Thirdly, His obedience to the request of Mary connotes that Mary is the Mediatrix – the intercessor of Divine Grace.

Though the exact location of Cana is not fully established in the Bible, the present location now of the church which is owned and administered by the Franciscan Order suggests several evidences pertaining to the event though not fully verified. There are other places being considered for this purpose.  Intensive study and excavation are still being done even until today.

Beneath the current church are remnants of dwellings that dates back as early as 1st century AD as well as evidences of the existence of another church because of the crosses excavated here.  Near the Franciscan Church is a Greek Orthodox Church which claims to house the original jars used in the wedding but some archeologist say that the jars are baptismal jars.

That the Bible Say

John 2:1-11

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

MY REFLECTION AT CANA

Jesus was obedient to Mary and I’ll take it from there.  We should be obedient to our mothers – biological and spiritual.  It is from our mother that we gain strength and courage.  They provide us unconditional love and lift us up to be the best persons we are.  We should be proud of our mothers. Our love to them would spell a lot of difference.
