How To Apply for a Japan Visa

Filipinos are required to obtain Japan Visa prior to arrival in the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’. Application for a Japan Visa can be lodged to any of their accredited travel agencies. Japan Visa is free, however service charge is being collected by their accredited agencies. Different agencies collect different rates.

The Embassy of Japan in Manila issues either a single entry visa or a multiple entry visa. Applicants need not specify this in their application documents. The Japan Embassy determines, based on the merit of the documents submitted, if you will be granted a single or multiple entry visa. Filipinos can stay for a maximum of 15 days in Japan per visit.

If you are being invited and the invitee will shoulder your expenses, here are the basic requirements to be submitted when applying for a Japan Visa.

1. Duly accomplished application form with correct photo size (The correct photo size is already available in your favorite Photo Center. Just say to them “ID picture for Japan Visa and they know already what to do) – download form here

2. Letter of Guarantee (this is the document that contains the details of the person who will spend for your trip) – download the form here

3. Letter of Reason for Invitation (this is the purpose of your travel to Japan) – download the form here

4. Schedule of Stay (This is your detailed daily itinerary. You need to specify in the form your flight details, hotel booking details and tour details) – down the form here

5. Overview of the Company/Organization in Japan (You need to properly provide details in the form) – download the form here

6. Flight ticket (reservation only)

7. Original and valid passport

8. Other documents as may be asked by the travel agency such as employment certificate, bank certificate (not passbook/ bank statement), company ID, BIR, NSO Birth Certificate etc.)

If your travel to Japan will be solely shouldered by yourself, here are the basic requirements to be submitted when applying for a Japan Visa. Note that other documents may still be asked.

1. Duly accomplished application form with correct photo size (The correct photo size is already available with your favorite Photo Center. Just say to them “ID picture for Japan Visa and they know already what to do) – download the form here

2. Schedule of Stay (This is your detailed daily itinerary. You need to specify in the form your flight details, hotel booking details and tour details) – down the form here

3. If you have a business, you need to provide your business documents such as DTI, LGU permit, BIR annual income tax return, etc.

4. If you are an employee, you need to provide your employment records such as Certificate of Employment, Leave of Absence, BIR Withholding tax, SSS/GSIS statement of contribution and such others as may be required

5. Bank Certificate

6. Flight ticket (reservation only)

7. Original and valid passport

8. Other documents as may be asked by the travel agency such as employment certificate, bank certificate (not passbook/ bank statement), company ID, BIR, NSO Birth Certificate, etc.)

You need to personally submit your application documents to the travel agency if you reside within Metro Manila or nearby provinces. If you are applying as a group (2 or more persons) and will travel together at the same time, the application maybe lodged by anyone in the group. Hence, personal appearance of all applicants is not required.

If you reside outside Metro Manila and far away provinces, such as those in Mindanao and the Visayas, you need not personally submit your application documents. The travel agency will accept application through courier (LBC, Air21, etc). However, you need to contact them prior to sending your documents.japan visa

Processing time is normally 5 working days. If you are granted a Japan Visa or not, you need to personally pick up your passport (or wait through courier if you submitted your documents through them). Only then will you learn if a Japan Visa has been issued to you.

The Japanese Embassy in Manila has already relaxed the requirements for Filipinos applying for Japan Visa. However, this does not mean that securing a Japan Visa will be as easy as you think it is.

I am not a Visa expert but the following are my tips when you intend to apply for a Japan Visa:

1. Make sure that your intent to travel to Japan is genuine – that is, you have to return to the Philippines on or before the expiration of your visa. Don’t apply for one if you intend to look for work or be a TNT.

2. Make sure you have traveled to other countries already. Don’t apply for a Japan Visa if it’s your first time traveling outside the Philippines. Exceptions apply for medication and family reasons (if your parent/relative resides in Japan and they invite you). A good travel history as shown in your passport is a good reason to be granted a Japan Visa.

3. Make sure you have a good amount of money as shown in your Bank Certificate. Note that standard of living in Japan is expensive. So how much is a good amount of money? There is no hard and fast rule. But I think you need to have at least 100,000.00 for 7 days. More amount for more days of stay.

4. Do not buy your ticket prior to applying for a visa (unless it’s a promo fare)

5. Do not finalize anything prior to visa application.

  1. Hi, I graduated college a year ago and have been saving for an Osaka trip since I started working, as such I cannot afford trips to other countries. Call it crazy but I want Japan to be my first out of the country destination. Does #2 in your tips means that I cannot apply for a Japanese Visa? Is that really a requirement?

And also, the P300,000.00, seriously? May I ask around how much did you present when you applied?

T.T My childhood dream just got wrecked.

    • Hi caren, thanks for dropping by. The tips I mentioned are based on my observation and experiences of other people. it still depends on the visa officer who will evaluate ur application. since japan doesnt give visa that easily to filipinos, I gave the tips to avoide being rejected. But then again, ul never know what luck may bring you. Wishing the best of luck.

    • I went to Japan last March 2014. It was my first travel outside the country. My bank acct was less than 300k but luckily I was granted a visa. In my opinion, as long as you show a strong proof that you will come back to the Philippines and you have a stable job here, it is possible to be granted one. As for me, I made sure that my COE will show my hiring date which was 2008 (6yrs of employment) then an approved VL forms signed by manager (though it is not stated in the website) and an email exchange from my manager and I that I guaranteed to be back to work after the travel (again this is not stated). My money in the bank was decent enough to cover the 7day trip. My suggestion is to make an itinerary that will match the money in your account. If you want to splurge maybe you can do it once you are there. Be realistic in your itinerary vs the money in your bank. Gambatte!

      • Hi AR, I want to ask if the BIR Income Tax Return form is a must? Would the Certificate of Employment and bank certificate suffice? Many thanks!

    • My husband and I were granted a Japan Visa last December. We had our 7-day honeymoon there. Each of us only showed 50k in our respective banks.

      • Hi There! My husband and I are planning to travel this November. I’m on my 7th year In BPO Industry but my husband is just a free lancer salesman.. no ITR no DTI or whatsoever we have at least 100K in our bank. Do we have any chance? Please response>Thanks

    • Hi! I had 40k for my 5 day trip to Tokyo. 🙂 I think, the content of the bank certificate must support the itinerary you submitted. 🙂 Also, before applying for a visa, plane tickets are required also, hotel/hostel reservations. I’ll come back this November, this time, Osaka and Kyoto.

    • Filipinos are required to obtain visa (any visa for that matter be tourist, spouse, work, study) prior to arrival in Japan. Your “tourist ticket” – whatever you mean by that, has nothing do to with visa and will NEVER give you permit to arrive in Japan.

  2. Omg, i dont have 300k! I just want to go to japan to bring my son to disneyland for his second birthday and this would be our first international flight if ever. Do you think it is possible? Thanks

  3. I only used 30k for my 5days trip to TOKYO. And I still have a couple of yen left after that.We just went their last May 2014. Though we presented 100k for our Bank Certificate just to make sure. but my friend was approved she only has 50k.

    • that is very nice to hear! if you spent 30K for a 5d4n tokyo trip with airfare, hotel, meals, transfers and tours, that’s superb! doing my math, i could hardly arrive at 30k. and your friend who has only 50k bank cert and got a visa, wow, amazing! i never knew that. perhaps u want to share more about it so other readers will take take it from there.

        • Finally done with our trip! Managed to spent 35k for our Osaka and Kyoto, Japan tour! It includes airfare, hotel accommodations, transportation, ticket entries to the tourist spots, ski, universal studios, food and shopping! You just have to do your math correctly! We are very satisfied with our itinerary! 🙂

            • We didn’t buy a subway pass, we only purchased a bus pass, but I suggest you buy one when you have your tour in Osaka and Tokyo. In Kyoto, not all tourist spots are accessible via train stations. You can buy a bus pass in Kyoto station, or if I’m correct, you can also buy it from 711 stores. I think it amounts to Y500, you can use it the whole day during your tour. One regular ride via a bus in Kyoto is Y230 for adults and I think Y200 for kids, so buying a bus pass is really a practical thing to do. 😉

          • Hi, amazed that you only spent 35k in your trip. Would you mind if I get a copy of your itinerary? Would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot. Looking forward to your reply, Ma’am Elaine.

          • Hi ms elane .me and my wife are planning also to have a vacation on japan.but were totally clueless whether its better to go on a package tour or not.can u share ur itinerary?

        • That would be enough. Check Air BNB for cheap accommodations. Go to Don Quijote where you can find cheap snacks. You can also try street foods like takoyaki. It’s like 400 yen for 8pcs. Get a week-train pass. It can help you save a lot. My husband and I only had 25k loose pesos converted all to yen and around 40-50k credit card limit.

  4. Hi, I’m traveling with my friends to Japan on Feb2015. It will be our first time traveling abroad, do you think it’s better to apply together for Japan visa, or it’s okay to apply separately?

Also we are preparing 100k each for our financial statements, me and one of my travel buddies are sharing a bank account (joint account), we are planning to apply on different dates so it would appear like we have 200k each. Will that be a great idea or they can still find that out? Thanks!

    • Hi Elaine. February 3-8, 2015 ako pupunta ng Japan with my 2 friends. I hope you don’t mind me asking kailan yung travel date nyo? Thanks. 🙂

        • Saang airport kayo? Narita kasi yung samen. Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka sana ang itinerary kaya lang medyo tentative pa kung tuloy kasi wala pang visa yung 2 kasama ko. Scared naman ako na mag-isa kaya naghahanap sana ako ng masasamahang group.

          • I see. Kansai, Osaka yung port namin. They can still apply for Japan visa. Try nyo sa reli tours, it took us 3 days lang then nreceive na namin visa agad. 😉 girl or boy ka?

          • I see. Kansai, Osaka yung port namin. They can still apply for Japan visa. Try nyo sa reli tours, it took us 3 days lang then nreceive na namin visa agad. 😉 girl or boy ka?

              • Nope, this trip was planned ahead. 🙂 How old are you and where do you live? I can ask my friends if we can include you on our trip. Pero the accommodation was already set. Siguro sa tour, or maybe we can share our Itinerary with you. Yun nga lang, Osaka and Kyoto lang kami. How much is your budget for the whole tour?

                • Manila, 27. Below is our suppose-to-be itinerary. 3 nights in Tokyo, 2 nights in Kyoto. Around P40k ang budget for the tour inlcuding JR Pass.

February 3, 4, 8 – Tokyo (DisneySea, Akihabara, Asakusa, Tokyo Skytree, etc.)
February 5, 7 – Kyoto (TOEI Studio Park, Fushimi Inari-taisha, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, etc.)
February 6 – Osaka (USJ, Osaka Castle Tower)

Appreciate it if you could share your itinerary as well. 🙂

                  • Feb 4 – arrival at osaka
Feb 5 – osaka (usj, osaka castle, dotonbori etc.)
Feb 6 – kyoto (biwako valley, nishiki market etc.)
Feb 7 – kyoto (kinkakuji, arashiyama etc.)
Feb 8 – kyoto (fushimi inari etc.) travel bck to kansai, osaka for our flight bck to ph.

  7. Me and my friend are planning to go to Japan this June. May ticket na kase since seat sale naman. Kaya lang we are both nervous on applying for a visa since this is the first time that she will travel abroad. As for me the only stamp on my passport is last 2013 when I went to SG. Do we still have a chance for a visa?

  9. Hi anyone traveling to Tokyo to Kyoto sometime in Feb 28-Mar 3? I’m traveling alone & first time in Japan. I’m wondering if anyone would accommodate me in their group tours? Just the tour lang.. 😀
    thank you.

      • My visa arrived just this Monday. I haven’t finalized my IT yet, I’ll be travelling to Thailand later this afternoon. I just wanted to see the Inari shrine, probably a glimpse of geisha in Gion, some more temples and the Golden Pavillion. of course. I am actually thinking of getting a tour package if ever. A friend of mine who used to live in Japan suggested that incase you’re a lone traveler because the transpo system is so complicated. I hope you’ll be able to receive your visa really soon. Let me know if I can squeeze in. (feeling close, hehehe)

  10. i need help.please about to.apply jap tourist visa i dont have ITR na active right niw nurse kc ako contractual.pa i have been to japan 10 yrs ago nag travel.na dn ako po sa ibat ibang country po kaso walang visa requirements yun.. makakatulong po ba ipakira ko na may letter of approval ako sa canada? to show na wala akong balak.mag stay ng matagal sa japan? gusto ko lang mag bakasyon kc.talaga po and might plan to take ielts sa japan po sana…may bank acvount po ako.more dan 5 yrs na may.movement naman po yung pera

  11. Hi! I’m just curious about the visa of my two kids… They passed the documents last feb.5 in reli tour megamall… I just tried to follow up that last Thursday but still no result…all of my documents are consistent. Is it Normal that it takes a month for the result?! Do you have any idea why?!…is it possible that they will approve or deny it?! Thanks and God bless

      • Yes,I have it!
I went in the agency’s last Thursday to follow up but still the answer is “wala pa daw”…
The expected date of their arrival in japan is march 15…
That was written in their Invitation.
I was worried…I’m leaving this coming Sunday and I’m expecting that they will come with me…do you think the visa is deny or they pass?!
        Thanks

        • As per my experience? They won’t tell you if you were denied or itnwas approved. You’ll just find out the moment you get your passport. But whether it was approved or denied, they should return your passport. They would retain the other pertinent papers though.

          • Thank you! I hope before Friday the visa will be okay…
Wish me luck and thank you for the advice…god bless

    • we applied nung feb, then nung nakuha namin yung visa ang validity is until May. so i guess mga july ka na lang mag apply, para if maapprove, it will most likely be until october valid.

  12. Hi ask ko lang po, i don’t have an ITR, what is my chance to have a tourist visa to japan? But i do have an bank account..
and this is not my first travel abroad..thank you

    • that i dont know, try to submit just that. kasi if wala ka itr, ibig sabihin wala ka work or business. ano source of income mo? pension? remittance? yung mga docs na yun nlang isubmit mo to support your financial ability =

  13. I’m planning on buying a promo flight ticket to Japan. I know that I need to provide an itinerary in applying with the information of where I’m staying, so do I have to book a hotel even before the visa application? or can I just indicate in the itinerary a possible hotel I’m staying but without a confirmation since it’s too risky to book it. thanks!

    • We booked our hotel hours after we were granted our visa. They are not strict with itinerary naman. They won’t check it too. Ilagay mo lang ang prospect hotel mo and its contact number. Believe me or not, we booked our hotel, an hour before the flight (kasi three hours before the flight din lang namin nakuha ang visa namin to Japan. Nakakaloka.) But it’s worth it.

      • Hi there Nikki! Kamusta travel nyo? Share ka naman ulit Please. and how about yun flight itinerary .Balak ko sana mag purchase pag may Visa na para sure.okay lang kaya? Thanks for your reply

  14. hey, thanks for this information regarding japan tour. i am travelling to japan on 3 to 13 august via osaka (kansai airport). i bought a japan rail pass for two weeks. i will be visiting osaka, fukuoka, nagasaki, hiroshima, kyoto, nagoya, mt fuji area and hopefully makarating ng tokyo kung di pa pagod and fly out from osaka. are there any travellers who have similar plans, we can catch up in japan.

  15. Hi @pinoyontheroad. Question how about for visiting a relative, it says that the guarantee can shoulder the expenses, air fare etc. But our plan is to use that type of visa so we will not be obliged to present a bank statement, and we will be the one to pay for the air fare, other expenses etc. Will they be asking for proof, like plane tickets from our relative like proof na sila ang sasagot kahit hindi? thank you in advance.

    • tkts are reservation only during visa application. also, dont try to mislead the embassy like the case u provided in your comment. it might be considered against you. as much as possible, be truthful sa lahat ng details ng visa mo. at least panatag ka. wala kang worries. best of luck

  16. Hi Author..I want to confirm sana kung mag pasa kami ng last week of September and then yun Flight and Hotel booking puro reservation lang kasi nga di pa sure diba?okay lang ba? Thanks sa reply.

  20. hi! Will be applying for a tourist visa soon. Will be in Japan for 7 days.
I have all the requirements, and i’m visiting my aunt in one of those 7 days. Do i still need to submit my aunt’s birth cert? I’m not declaring her as my guarantor though, because i’ll shoulder all the expenses. But this will be declared on my itinerary.

    Thanks in advance!

  21. Hi. I’m going to submit my requirements by the end of october. I have been to Thailand but that was way back 2007 I’m only going to submit my new passport with no stamps. I’m complete na with my requirements though I’m planning to submit my approved leave. Any chance kaya na ma approve kahit wala pang stamp yung passport ko?

    • i have the same situation with you. last time i travelled was last 2008 pa in china. ung new passport ko has no stamp. the advice given to me by Reli travel and tours in MOA was that isubmit ko rin yung lumang passport ko na may tatak which incoudes the chinese visa.

    • @deleted
I think its primarily because when you get denied the first time, you’ll have to wait for 6 mos before you can apply again. I am not so sure though.
Anyway, Id also like to apply for a Japan tourist Visa next year. I hope I can get a sample of 7day itinerary for 50-70k budget. Thanks in advance. 🙂

  30. Hi! I am currently a working student. I work as a part time english online tutor. My company said that they can’t provide ITR but instead just some form from BIR stating that a contribution is given for every class. Something like extended withheld tax. Tapos a certificate from my company na nag state na I am an online teacher. I have a savings bank account but it’s just around 60-70k. Group tour kami pero ako lang ang mag aapply since ang mga kasama ko ay meron nang mga visa from their last trip. Isa lang ang stamp ko sa passport ko, yung SG trip ko last year. I had many stamps from my previous passport but it got lost. I still have the police report dun sa nawala kong passport. Im planning to submit an explanation letter regarding my ITR and my lost passport pero di ko alam kung paano ko ieexplain. please help me. what are my chances?

  31. Hi,

We already have a plane ticket for 12-day trip.

    • Just apply truthfully. Faking details with your application would most likely bring harm than good if these were to be scrutinized 🙂

  32. Hi, my SSS Middle name and Passport Middle name has a discrepancy. Will this have any impact with my VISA Application?

  33. Hi, me and my husband will go to japan this November. Can we submit joined account bank certificate or need separate bank account? Thanks in advance.

  34. My friends and I are planning to go to Japan for 5days . I have a guarantor there. Is it possible ba na i-gurantor ko din yung mga kasama ko ? I mean iisa lang yung guarantor namin. Ayoko kasi ma denied sila. First time lang namin pare pareho mag travel. I know walang assurance, pero may nakagawa na po kaya ng ganito dtio? Salamat

  35. Hai po, ask ko lang po ano po ba mga dahilan Kung bakit po ma de deny ang visa??? Nag apply po ako ng visa ning September 8 2016.. Sana ma grant yung visa ko..
