The Floating Markets make Bangkok more interesting. To date, the Floating Markets particularly exist for the tourists to experience rural Bangkok. Hence, expect everything to me very commercialized.
Today I am visiting Damnoen Saduak Floating Market as part of the tour package I purchased. There are other several Floating Markets in Bangkok apart from this one. This tour is done in the morning. No floating market tours are done in the afternoon.
The tour starts in a landing station where we took a motorized boat that goes to the river canal passing several villages or houses. The water is dirty if I may say.
Locals use boat as mode of transportation. Their street is the river canal.
The boat ride took about 30 minutes before we reached the market. I think its part of the package that the boatman has to tour us around the river canals before reaching the market. At the market, merchants sell their goods either using a small paddle boat or at the river banks. They sell anything here.
The floating market is a good place to take pictures. It is not however a good place to shop as prices are even more expensive here than in the City Center. The floating market is a timeless master piece of rural life along the river canals. Paddle boat ride is also available for tourists who want to experience the thrill of rural life.
I think the floating market is the single most interesting place to visit in Bangkok.
